I'll admit I have a major pet peeve! It is beauty magazines proclaiming to be talking about the "science" of one product or another... when in reality, very little science is discussed. Also, commercials for many beauty products make incredible claims that need to be viewed with a skeptical eye. When I look at beauty products, I do it from the viewpoint of a biologist (specifically a histologist) who is curious how these chemicals interact with the cells. I enjoy exploring the chemical and physical properties of these items we use everyday.

Here are my favorite videos in this genre. They have captured the attention of numerous young ladies and even a few make-up artists!

Chemical Properties of Mascara

(more science)

Hydrophobic (waterproof)

Hydrophilic (water soluble)

Beauty tubes (sophisticated polymer)

 Flammability of Nail Polish

Science of Botox (4 video series-blog post)

Explores microbial and human interaction.

Molecular action of botulinun toxin described.

Medical and cosmetic uses explained.

I have begun a series at the local public library called "Supermodel Science" where participants (usually young ladies) get hands-on experience with important chemical basics such as solubility, emulsification, and surfaction.
I cover the biology of skin and hair, as well as the physical properites of light tanning/burning and how sunscreens work. Understanding the physical properties of light can also assist us with camouflage and contouring work to help us look our best when applying make-up .

I will be posting the protocol I used in these outreach series in the next few months.
I also plan to create more videos including one about a skin cream that acts like mini batteries on the skin!
